More than half a century since its invention, Minimoog Model D is back in production at the Moog factory in Asheville, North Carolina.
Originally released in 1970, the Minimoog Model D represented a truly pivotal moment in synth history and to this day continues to be one of the most significant, revered and beloved sonic tools of its generation. The all-analogue instrument gained wide acclaim for being the first synth to combine the colossal sound of the 1960s Moog modular systems (largely unobtainable for most mere mortals) with the accessibility and portability of pre-wired modules – giving it instant and intuitive hands-on appeal with no patching required while also putting it within reach of an altogether new audience. It has graced the studios and workspaces of countless electronic music pioneers and musicians since; its sound having shifted the musical landscape into altogether new territories, helping unearth new sonic grounds and genres along the way.
Hand-Built to Last a Lifetime
Housed in a beautiful Appalachian cherry enclosure and hand-finished aluminium chassis, the three-oscillator, monophonic, analogue synthesiser has been painstakingly built to the exact specifications as the original, with every detail faithfully recreated; from the exact placement of components to the same through-hole design of a 1970s-era Minimoog Model D. While no changes have been made to the sound engine or signal path, the 2022 reissue offers a series of modern-day functions that expand the capabilities and usability beyond that of the original. These include a dedicated LFO with triangle and square wave shapes, premium Fatar keyed with aftertouch and velocity sensitivity, MIDI integration, and even a feedback modification that allows the Minimoog to overdrive into fat and filthy screw-face distortion.
