We’re delighted to announce our first batch of Funky Junk SSL 4000G Channel Strips are now live on the site and ready to ship! Available in single and dual configurations, each channel packs the legendary sound of SSL’s console preamp, EQ and dynamics into a convenient, custom-built 19” rack housing, replete with horizontal silkscreen labelling. Each channel has been constructed with fully refurbished original vintage SSL 4000 modules with new switching power supply and XLR connections. It’s the classic SSL sound, rehoused for the modern studio.
Funky Junk have had a lot of experience with SSL 4000 consoles; not just installing and servicing them, but also modifying and adapting larger channel count desks to better suit the demands of modern hybrid recording studios. This has provided us with the unique experience and knowledge required to get the very best out of these incredible boards, showcasing the full sonic potential in a compact and familiar format without compromising performance. It was only a matter of time before the Funky Junk SSL Classic 4000 G channel strips came to be.
If there’s a console that needs no introduction, it’s the 4000 E/G series, a genuine milestone in the history of recording.
Introduced by Solid State Logic in the mid 1970s , the SSL 4000 combined classic recording and mixing functions with extra features such as direct control of analogue recorders, fader automation and Total Recall, which allowed the user to save settings of all mixer rotary controls and then recall those settings at a later time – a big deal at the time. The 4000 Series in-line channels offered significant sonic improvements over the standards of the time, quickly becoming the benchmark console for rock music thanks to its tight and punchy sound.
The E series and its future modifications ( Brown , Orange or Black Knob ) culminated in 1987 with the SSL 4000 G Series console improving upon certain technical details of its predecessors, offering cleaner circuitry, more precise EQ and a moving fader option among other things. Boasting a superior dynamic range with excellent headroom, the 4000 G Series channels feature with mic/line preamps, VCA gate/compressor, a 4-band EQ section (co-developed with George Martin, no less), and unprecedented routing flexibility. Thanks to its unique and unmistakably punchy and musical sound, the revolutionary Solid State Logic 4000 console soon conquered the market and could be found installed in various hit-making studios the world over, with a rich legacy that continues since it was first introduced through to this day.
